Please see below for information about playing hockey at Chedoke. You may also find some answers to your questions on our Registration Information page.

Equipment

Full equipment is required at all times. The league will supply a jersey and socks once the regular season begins. Click HERE to view a Hockey Canada video on the proper fitting of the needed equipment for hockey.

We have limited sets of goalie equipment (pads, chest protectors and gloves) available for players in the junior divisions (U11, U13). Contact us at [email protected] for information on obtaining these.

Evaluations

Our season begins with evaluations. These normally take place the last weekend in September or the first weekend in October.

You will be contacted, with a specific date and time, approximately one week prior to your ice time. We ask that you arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time and check in at our table in the lobby.

Players should wear a numbered jersey. If you do not have one you will be assigned a pinnie when you check in.

Players will be on the ice for approximately 90 minutes and will take part in a series of drills and a controlled scrimmage.

Please do not be concerned about your child’s ability during this session. We use these evaluations as a basis for assigning players to teams in the hopes of making all teams as even as possible.

Rosters

Our coaches, convenors and divisional Vice-Presidents will meet following the evaluations to assign all players to teams. When this process is complete you will be contacted by your coach. You can expect this to happen the week after evaluations.

Schedules are posted to the website as soon as our ice time is confirmed by the City. This is usually in mid-September.

Until team assignments are complete you will not know exactly what your schedule will be, however, you can check the divisional schedules to get an idea of the normal times for your child’s age group.

Goalies

Goalie positions will be shared if registrations exceed the number of teams in a division.

Play-together requests

Due to the large number of requests we would receive, we are not able to accommodate any requests for placements with other players, or requests for placements on specific teams. Siblings in the same division will be placed on the same team.

Team Balance

The Convenor, in conjunction with the Divisional Vice President, may move players to or from a team during the first few weeks of the season to account for any large inequities occurring from the player draft.

Regular Season

The season begins in late September or early October and ends in mid-March with Super Saturday.

U9, U11 and U13  teams will have one practice and one game each week (one hour each); usually on the weekend.

The same is true for U15 but then they transition to games only in the 2nd half of the season.

U18 teams play games only all season; usually on Sunday and Monday nights.

Note: We keep standings for the regular season, however, all teams make the playoffs.

Venues

While we will attempt to keep as much of our program as possible housed at Chedoke and during weekend hours, ice scheduling and team numbers may necessitate the scheduling of some games and practices at other locations on other days.

Playoffs

Playoff format is determined at the start of each season depending on how many teams in each division. Standings will be compiled and the top two teams in each division will move on to the championship (Super Saturday).

Super Saturday

The date for Super Saturday is set by the Hamilton Minor Hockey Council in conjunction with the City of Hamilton.

Super Saturday normally takes place in mid-March and is the final day of the Chedoke Minor Hockey League season.

Teams who win a Super Saturday championship will be given the opportunity to participate in the City Playdowns. The winning teams from each of the Recreational House Leagues participate in this tournament in order to declare a City House League Champion. Play normally takes place in the week following Super Saturday and can be any evening or on the weekend.

Select

Select hockey is intended for House League players who are ready for more. Like House League, Select is also non-contact.

If numbers warrant, Chedoke Minor Hockey will offer U9, U11, U13, U15 and U18 Select teams. In addition, the Hamilton Mustangs Select Development teams will offer a City-wide development Select Program in U12, U14 and U16.

Placement on these teams is by tryout. Tryouts will be scheduled over the first few weeks of the regular season in October. All players are welcome to tryout. Times and dates will be posted when they are available.

Players selected for these teams will be on the ice an additional one to three hours per week. Select teams play exhibition games against other Select teams from around the Golden Horseshoe and also enter Select tournaments.

Playing Select is a privilege. Select team participation is in addition to regular House League play. A position on a Select team hinges on the player supporting the House League program. Select players must participate in their House League games and practices.

All players interested in Select are required to attend the tryouts for their division.

All players must skate at their division tryout according to their house league division and be released from the tryouts prior to being considered for an additional team, should one be created. There are no exceptions without Executive approval.

Any player who does not attend the tryouts for their division, or is not formally released from the tryout process or declines an offer to play, cannot subsequently tryout for an additional team, should one be created.

Select teams are self-supporting and additional fees apply.
