Flyers bring their A game
The Flyers coaching staff was informed Saturday night that they would be without star forward #19 Liam and defensive guru #10 Matt for 2 and 8 games respectfully due to an altercation that happened during a select game in the morning.
With two of the three Hanson brothers not dressed for the game against the Senators and #77 Justin still on long term injury reserve the Flyers had to dig deep as the Senators were looking to dispose of a short benched Flyers squad. The Sens came out strong and tested rookie netminder Raff, but Raffaele was up for the challenge turning aside all shots and eating every rebound like it was a pepperoni pizza and didn't turtle when the Sens crashed the net. The Flyers weathered the early onslaught and at the three minute mark an early candidate for goal of the year came off of #34 Seba's stick as he used his speed to breakout of our end and turned the defenseman inside out and put a move on the Senators goalie that made his body move in ways it was not made to move (picture Linda Blaire in the Exorcist). The Sens tied it up early in the second but a minute and half later #71 Lico gave us the lead 2-1 with a beautiful give and go with #34 Seba. with two and half minutes left in the second the Flyers scored a PP goal with #7 Valvasori always in the right spot buried a rebound off of #8 Morro's shot Flyers up 3-1. The Sens made it 3-2 late in the second. The third period started off on the wrong foot as something happened that I've never seen in forty years of playing and coaching, #97 Spadafora broke his stick and as he was looking at it on the ice coach JP yelled LEAVE IT LEAVE IT and Spadafora started to bend to pick it up then the linesman started yelling LEAVE IT LEAVE IT DON'T TOUCH IT LEAVE IT at that point Spadafora looked at the linesman and picked up both pieces of the stick and bolted for the bench (think of a puppy who stole a chip from your hand) the linesman gives chase the whole time yelling DROP IT DROP IT (it was like watching an episode of cops) finally the Ref had to make the call and the Flyers were now a man short. With a man advantage the Sens looked to tie it up but with bad pass to the point clearing our zone #34 seen his chance and took off easily out skating the Sens D to pick up the loose puck and slide a sweet pass across to #71 Lico who potted his second of the night short handed and also giving us a 4-2 lead. Midway through the third #97 Spadafora who took some healthy slack from the coaches and teammates about his penalty scored another goal of the year candidate as he picked up the puck at centre and dipsy doodled his way through the Sens team and went five hole on the Sens goalie. The Sens scored shortly after but to little to late as the Flyers pulled out a 5-3 victory.
